Mount Trebević: The gem of Sarajevo

Nature around Sarajevo

Nestled in the heart of Sarajevo, Trebević Mountain is an unmistakable presence, with its iconic TV tower perched atop. This natural wonder embraces Sarajevo from the south, offering a picturesque backdrop to the city. For generations, Sarajevans have flocked to Trebević for outings, once reached via a cable car that operated from Bistrik to the Olympic bobsleigh track’s starting point. Unfortunately, during the war, the cable car was devastated, but in 2018, it was restored, making Trebević accessible once more. Today, you can reach Trebević on foot, by cable car, or with a 20-minute taxi or car ride via the road leading to Jahorina, passing through Vraca and Brus.

Exploring Trebević

Known as “Sarajevo’s lungs,” Trebević is the closest mountain you can reach by cable car from the heart of the Old Town. Starting from the cable car’s arrival station, where the reconstruction of the once-popular Vidikovac restaurant is about to begin, you can follow paved roads or marked hiking trails that lead in various directions, each offering distinct experiences.

With ample parking space, well-maintained picnic areas, and several restaurants, Brus serves as the ideal starting and ending point for your Trebević adventure. Sports and recreation enthusiasts will find everything they need at the Brus sports and recreation center, including playgrounds for kids, lakeside walking balls, paintball, basketball, volleyball, and small football courts. You can rent mountain bikes and quads and enjoy a rich culinary offering, a small zoo, and barbecue spots.

From Brus, you can embark on a two-hour, 500-meter ascent to Trebević’s peak (1,629 meters) along well-marked paths through spruce and pine forests, all while relishing views of Romanija and Bukovik. At the summit, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramas of Sarajevo, nearby towns and villages, and the enchanting mountain ranges. Explore this pristine area, which offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Sarajevo, yet is conveniently close.

Sunnyland and Thrill-Seeking

If you approach Trebević via Vraca or Širokača, you’ll encounter Sunnyland, an amusement park for both kids and adults. Its main attraction is an adrenaline-pumping alpine coaster, offering a thrilling ride down the hillside with Sarajevo as your backdrop. Trebević also boasts a protected climbing rock, Via ferrata Bijela stijena, challenging climbers and providing mesmerizing views of Sarajevo.

More Thrills at Trebević

Trebević offers an array of adrenaline-inducing experiences. Level Up Hotel provides ziplining over 350 meters and caters to children as well. For those who recall the 1984 Winter Olympics, Trebević features a bobsleigh and sled track, now adorned with colorful graffiti, making it a popular spot for walking, running, photography, and extreme sports like downhill mountain biking.

Historical Significance

Trebević holds historical value with an Austro-Hungarian military fortification called Bistrička kula on Čolina kapa, where an observatory was added in 1969, although it was destroyed during the recent war.
